In 2007, retiring from the Avon Corporation after over 30 years, a still youthful Joyce Mitcchell was not content to live a leisurely life.
She opened a small gift boutique in a small house just north of Shady Gables. She named it Emme’s Attic in honor of her two grandchildren who called her Emme. Assisted by her husband, now deceased, Bud Mitchell, she opened for business hoping for a daily gross of $200.
The business grew, assisted by many of her friends, but according to Joyce it was Reba Silvey at Shady Gables who steered a lot of business her way.
Later, as business grew, she moved to a building on the courthouse square and more and more people visited.
Then, in 2009, she met Ray Speckman. They combined their two housefuls of antiques and Ray opened an antique shop on West Jasper, Emme’s Annex. Joyce lost her lease on the building on the square and combined the boutique with the antiques at the Annex.
“Ray brought a new dimension to Emme’s Attic,” Joyce smiles and says. “He had been a part of several successful businesses in the Lake of the Ozarks area including the Lake Sun Newspaper, Radio Station KLDN (now KLOZ), and Camp Bagnell Fish and Steak House. He was the consummate marketing professional and brought a new dimension to Emme’s Attic.”
Today, after five years on West Jasper where the City of Versailles has resurfaced the streets, built new sidewalks and installed street lights, Emme’s has become a destination visit in addition to the huge local business that has supported Emme’s from the beginning.
Together Joyce and Ray operate Emme’s attic with the aid of a tremendous staff. “Carla Wenger, Buzz Trompler, Sharrie Marriott and Dawn Moritz are hard working members of our family who have helped Emme’s grow more and more every year.”
“We have promotions that provide fun times for our customers every year,” says Joyce. Our business grows at a tremendous rate. In the past year alone it had increased over 50% and we estimate that over 30,000 customers have come through our door in the past year. It is a blessing to offer good products at quality prices and mix in often special sale discounts.”
One of the secrets to Emme’s success: She does not attend product shows. Instead on the many trips that she and Ray take every year, they look for the unusual, the different and economical. “We have what no other boutique for miles around has and priced right,” Joyce says.
Emme’s Attic prides itself of serving locals and being a destination stop for customers from miles away.
